Types of Orthopedic Surgery?

Bangalore is located in the southeast of the state of Karnataka in India. In the middle of Mysore Plateau, a part of the larger Deccan Plateau, around 900 meters above sea level.

The city loves football and cricket. The city has many gardens and parks where people can play sports. The city is also home to some of the top national cricket superstars. Basketball and tennis are also some of the popular sports in Bangalore.

Any sport comes with certain injuries. No matter how careful you are in playing sports, an accident may happen, causing painful injuries, like sprain or fracture. While some injuries can go away after a nice massage and a pack of ice, there are severe injuries where a person needs a trip to an emergency room.

Dealing with an injury is difficult. These injuries may keep you from doing your daily activities, and the uncertainty of knowing if things will get back to normal can be very heartbreaking.

Depending on the injury and the surgeon who will do the procedure, an athlete may or may not play the sports again. With that in mind, it is crucial to bring the injured person to the best orthopaedics hospital in bangalore to have surgery.

The word surgery can be very scary. However, if the surgeon who’s going to do the procedure has done it many times, there’s nothing to worry about it as common surgeries have a high success rate.

Below are the most common types of orthopedic surgery.

Knee replacement

Depending on your injury’s severity, you may need a total or partial knee replacement surgery. Both injuries are due to damage to the knee joints’ cartilage that makes your movement painful and restricted. This injury is due to trauma, obesity, or bursitis as a result of repetitive movement.

When you undergo a total knee replacement surgery, the surgeon will remove the entire damaged knee and replace it with metal components. On the other hand, partial knee replacement surgery will only replace the damaged portion.

ACL reconstruction

ACL means an Anterior Cruciate Ligament, one of the major ligaments in the knee. It is located diagonally at the front side of the knee, providing stability when legs rotate.

The procedure will require a portion of a tendon from another body part and use it as a graft, replacing the damaged ACL. Normally, you can go home right after the surgery. Once at home, you must follow the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

If you are an athlete, it may take around a year before you can normally play again, so you need to be patient.

Hip replacement

The femur or thigh bone is connected to the pelvis or hip bones by a ball-and-socket joint. The upper part of the femur is the “ball” portion, called the femoral head. On the other hand, the “socket” part in the pelvis is the acetabulum. If you have healthy hips, the femoral head and the acetabulum fit perfectly, with cartilage allowing the joints to move smoothly.

Hip replacement surgery has two different types:

  • The traditional approach is when the whole ball-and-socket joint is replaced with a plastic or metal prosthesis.
  • Birmingham Hip Resurfacing approach is when only the damaged part is replaced. This surgery is less invasive and has faster recovery.

Shoulder replacement

In this surgery, the surgeon will remove the upper portion of the humerus or the upper arm bone and replace it with a metal ball. Then, the surgeon will remove the socket’s damaged portion and replace it with a plastic component. The ligaments and the tendons in the shoulder or rotator cuff will hold everything in place.

However, if the rotator cuff happens to be injured, the surgeon will do the Reverse Shoulder Replacement. In this procedure, the metal ball is inserted into the socket. The plastic prosthesis is then placed on the upper portion of the humerus held together by plates and screws.

Knee arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy surgery is less invasive. It requires a small cut where the surgeon can insert a camera attached to the instruments to see what’s happening inside the knee joint. The images will be shown on a screen, and the surgeon will use tiny instruments to fix the problem.

These are just some of the common types of orthopedic surgery often done at the best orthopedic hospitals in Bangalore. Since the surgeons have been doing these procedures repeatedly, you can rest assured that nothing will go wrong during the operation.

Accidents in sports or at work can happen anytime, and they are unavoidable. However, by following safety measures, you can minimize the chance of damage, keeping you from having severe injuries that require major orthopedic surgical procedures.
